ROBBERG COASTAL WALKS
Discover the Magic

"When God created the Garden Route, He must have been in a very good mood".

The Southern Cape is a wonderful place, with its lovely coastline, pristine forests and majestic mountains. Yet most who come here do not discover the depth of its riches. The best way to do this is on foot, and preferably with a knowledgeable guide.

ROBBERG NATURE RESERVE

"A singular mountain and different from any other I have seen in Africa"

Karl Thunberg - 1772 swedish botanist and explorer

Robberg Nature Reserve along with kilometres of glorious beaches, edges the "Bay Beautiful" - Plettenberg Bay. Robberg has it all - spectacular scenery, unimpeded vistas of ocean and shore, uniquely adapted vegetation, a thriving seal colony, caracal, grysbok, porcupine, rock hyrax sunbirds and seabirds and funny little lizards (agamas) who watch you quizzically wherever you sit. On top of all this are its other secrets - fossils of unimagined antiquity under one's feet (if you know where to look): caves where stone-age man hunted and fished, lived and died; stories of shipwrecks more dramatic than any fiction, and of fishing tales from times when shoals of great game fish surged past its flanks. Even the rock faces have tales to tell of giant inland seas, rising and falling mountain ranges and sea levels - the birth and death of rocky beaches and quiet lagoons.

The Island at Robberg Nature reserve

Walk high above the water and view schools of dolphins, gamefish or shark as they pass by. From May to November the peninsula offers excellent land based whale watching when the Southern Right Whale comes into the shelter of the bay to mate and calve.

Take one of three guided walks - especially tailored to suit your personal interests and fitness level.

THE KNYSNA FOREST

Kranshoek Cliffs in the Knysna Forest

Walk in the indigenous Knysna forest, haunt of the last of the Knysna forest elephants. Absorb its silence and mystery, broken only by the call of the Knysna Loerie and other forest birds. Lunch at the edge of the ocean at Kranshoek. Then take the stunningly beautiful climb down through the forest to the sea, criss- crossing the Klein Eiland River on the way. Walk the ruggedly beautiful coast over distinctive pebble beaches and back up the spectacular cliffs - this offers wonderful photographic opportunities.

NATURES VALLEY

Once the convict camp of famous master road builder, Thomas Bain (1875 - 1883), the wonderful scenery and sense of being at one with nature make a walk in this lovely valley most worthwhile. The Salt River Valley walk with its panoramic views is stunningly beautiful - combining the climb through indigenous forest and fynbos with the stroll along the pure white beaches. The Kalandar Kloof walk takes us to the feet of the majestic "forest giants" Outeniqua Yellowwoods which tower above the forest canopy.

The Grootrivier Walk contrasts water, beaches and vegetation noted for its birds - this includes a short, stiff climb to the top of the "Pigs Head" - geologic oddity offering more stunning views. It is here that one is most likely to spot the elusive Knysna Loerie or rare Nerina Trogon.
